TEXTBOOKS
Publications updated August 2008
Here follows a limited list of recent publications for EFL at secondary schools. It is definitely not exhaustive and we are gladly willing to supplement it with missing titles. The list is simply descriptive and holds no evaluation. The editors are listed alphabetically.
We asked British educational publishers which courses they would advise us to use with 1° students taking general studies and 2° students taking non-specific technical studies and here is what they suggested:

John Wells (University College London) and Gerald Kelly (Northumbria University) say that it is time to lay Received Pronunciation to rest. Wells’ 2007 Pronunciation Preference Poll provides proof that acceptable pronunciations are changing and that some differences in preferred pronunciation can be attributed partly to the generation gap between the respondents.
Some changes in pronunciation:
|
Happy |
Daniel Jones's happy had a more closed pronunciation in its stressed vowel and a short i. His RP is no longer heard today. |
|
Sold |
The typical [ₔᵤ]-sounds are moving towards [o]. |
|
Contribute |
The accent on the second syllable is typical of British English. |
|
mischievous |
Young people trend to put the accent on the second syllable |
|
Tune, tutor, Tuesday, |
There is a move towards [tj] towards [tᶴ ] |
|
Duty, reduce, endure, during |
There is a move from [dj ] towards [dᶾ ]. |
|
White |
The pronunciation of the h before the wh- is disappearing. |
|
Goose |
There is a move from [u:] towards [əu] |
|
Yours |
There is a move from [o:z] towards [uəz] |
